Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Proctor, West Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in hair testing, with centers nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, you need between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body to proceed. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other specialized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug screenings. A number of employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts are choosing hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are conducive for employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal proceedings, and those on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection timeframe, often up to 90 days, ensuring nearly impossible tampering and observed collection. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drugs. When gathered near the scalp, hair samples can reflect alcohol and drug usage over roughly a three-month span. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample segment of 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for screening and confirmation purposes. For tests such as EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is missing, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. Referring to head hair specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the laboratory processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is entered into the laboratory's system. It ensures the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening efficiently eliminates drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples presumptively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves drawing out drugs from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening poses the greatest challenge in methodology.

Positive screening results are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can spot drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test leads to more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the test assesses the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Proctor, WV, hair follicle tests offer distinct benefits over traditional urine testing. Hair tests boast superior detection accuracy and reliability, capturing substance use patterns missed by urine tests. Their extended observation window provides a more complete view of an individual's drug history. Plus, hair tests are difficult to falsify, ensuring trustworthy outcomes, unlike urine tests which can be tampered with more easily.

Extended Detection Window

Offering an extensive detection window, hair follicle tests in Proctor, WV, reveal drug use over a period of up to 90 days. This thorough timeframe gives employers a detailed look into an applicant or employee's substance use history. With such accurate assessments, employers can secure confident hiring and workforce management decisions, knowing they have a complete view of the individual's past substance behaviors.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Proctor, WV, hair follicle testing effectively minimizes risks associated with sample tampering, providing credible, unquestionable results. Unlike urine tests which can be more easily altered or falsified, hair tests ensure the integrity of the sample through observed collections. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
