Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Rockport, WV. We're experts in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, with nationwide centers prepared to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp—or body hair—are needed. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized options as needed.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a common method for drug testing. It's preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation situations often use this testing. Its main advantage is a detection period up to 90 days, using an observed collection process that is nearly cheat-proof. However, urine tests remain most accurate for recent usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has evolved into a robust mechanism for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands' growing fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirming. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in a laboratory is comprised of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process includes ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, giving it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering additional data absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid inspection for drug misuse. Screening is economical for ruling out drug use in many samples, but to ensure court admissibility, a positive result must be validated. Any samples that are tentatively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests tentatively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at concentrations much lower than those found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), indicating hair drug screening as one of the most intricate methods.

Any positive Screening result undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing tentatively positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which offer shorter periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably tough, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It presents longitudinal data on drug usage, not limited to current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect recent usage: Detecting drugs in hair requires about 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug tests often cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Fluctuation in outcomes: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand itself, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Rockport, WV, excels over traditional urine tests by offering higher detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine testing, hair analysis can identify drug use over a wider period, giving more comprehensive results. Its accuracy renders it preferred by employers and legal entities seeking dependable substance assessments.

Compared to urine tests, hair analysis is almost impossible to tamper with, providing trustworthy results every time. This robust method ensures consistent detection unaffected by short-term abstention or attempts to cheat the system.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Rockport, WV, offers a significantly more extended detection window than other methods. By examining usage over up to 90 days, employers can gain comprehensive insights into an individual's drug history. This period is markedly longer than that of urine tests, allowing for thorough assessments.

With this prolonged observation period, employers can evaluate applicants or employees confidently, ensuring a safer working environment. The extended timeline provides clarity and a deeper understanding of potential substance habits.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Rockport, WV, hair follicle testing offers a tamper-resistant approach to substance assessment. The complexities of adulterating hair samples significantly reduce risks, ensuring reliability and indisputable results.
This secure method surpasses the limitations faced by other tests, where tampering is more plausible. Providing peace of mind to employers and authorities, it ensures outcomes are trustworthy and reflective of true substance usage.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
