Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Valley Grove, WV. Specializing in hair-based drug and alcohol screening, we maintain facilities across all major cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient for testing, allowing for analyses of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for detecting substance use. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, legal courts, and rehabilitation professionals now favor hair testing over traditional urine analysis. Hair tests offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days, making them nearly foolproof in an observed setting. For recent drug use, within five days, urine tests remain accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can provide an extended history of substance use by trapping drug biomarkers in the growing hair strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, equivalent body hair can be used. Head hair pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with incorporating a sample into a laboratory’s system. It involves ensuring that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial quick assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for addressing drug usage in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is required for court acceptance. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of positive screening results employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Tough to deceive: Hair drug tests are very difficult to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: They provide a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers superior advantages in Valley Grove, WV. A key benefit is its increased detection window, lasting up to 90 days, which significantly outperforms the short coverage of urine tests. This extended range provides a deeper insight into an individual's drug history, making hair testing a more reliable choice for employers aiming to maintain a drug-free workplace.

Hair tests excel in detection accuracy, capturing drugs that may be missed by urine tests. The longstanding detection period grants Valley Grove employers comprehensive visibility into substance use patterns, enhancing screening effectiveness. As a more robust testing method, hair analysis proves indispensable for businesses that prioritize reliability and thoroughness in their drug testing protocols.

Extended Detection Window

In Valley Grove, WV, hair follicle testing stands as a superior method for assessing drug use over extended periods. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
