Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Wardensville, West Virginia. For those requiring a drug or alcohol hair test, our specialty is hair examinations, and with nationwide testing centers, we can conduct these tests in all cities. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary for most scenarios. Hair tests accommodate checks for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle tests. A variety of employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over customary urine testing. This method attracts entities upholding strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary individuals due to its extensive drug use detection period, up to 90 days, collected through a supervised process, making it nearly uncheatable. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most precise for uncovering recent drug indulgences within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are recognized as an effective means to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by containing biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of nearly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are straightforward to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section including roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) when taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. 'Head hair' pertains solely to scalp hair. 'Body hair' is used to describe all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal phases in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s framework. It includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data documentation not supplied by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves a preliminary swift assessment for substance abuse. While Screening offers an economical approach to rule out most drug use cases, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo further verification.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive result at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations considerably lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), defining why hair drug testing is among the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive Screening findings is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 certifications.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can pick up drug use extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Historical usage patterns: It can display a timeline of drug usage over a duration, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug testing usually incurs more expenses than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
