Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Ahnapee, Wisconsin. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in these tests and have locations nationwide to conduct them. For most tests, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored to specific testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, the legal system, and probation officers. The key advantage of hair tests is their longer detection period, typically up to 90 days, performed through an observed collection process that's nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol intake. The hair contains long-term data of alcohol and various drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, it can provide a detection span extending up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, making it ideal for testing and verification. For EtG testing, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's preferable to measure the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a matching quantity of body hair might be used. Note that when discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively, while body hair encompasses other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is structured into four core procedures: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the introductory step where a sample is processed into the lab's system. This encompasses confirming the sample's proper seal and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a swift preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. While it offers a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug use in most cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening do need further verification.

Should a sample be tentatively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis among the most rigorous techniques.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is employed for authenticating any positive Screening outcome. All tentatively positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The complete lab workflow from Accessioning through Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter span.
  • Difficult to deceive: Altering results in a hair drug assessment is exceptionally tough, enhancing accuracy.
  • Supplies trend data: Displays a pattern of drug use over an extended time rather than recent use only.

Drawbacks:

  • Lacks detection of recent ingestion: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug assessments cost more than other methods.
  • Result disparities: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually pertains to the strand of hair, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
