Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Casco, Wisconsin. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol tests, we specialize in hair testing and offer facilities nationwide that conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere on the body is sufficient. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Recently, the adoption of hair follicle testing in drug screening has increased. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal bodies, and probationers benefit from hair follicle testing. Its key advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, with observed sample collection, reducing tampering. Still, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an influential technique, hair testing is utilized for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers, hair presents a prolonged history of alcohol and drug usage. Collected near the scalp, it can reveal up to a nearly 90-day detection period for these substances. Acquiring hair samples is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil’s width) taken closest to the scalp will result in 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it’s suggested to acquire 150mg of the sample. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In cases where scalp hair isn’t present, a comparable amount of body hair is suitable. Scalp hair exclusively refers to head hair, while body hair covers all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the introductory stage of entering a sample into the laboratory framework. This includes validating the sample's seal and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial, swift examination for drug use. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug use for most samples, to hold in court, a positive screen necessitates verification. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptively positive outcome during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are abstracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is deemed the most intricate technique to execute.

Confirmation of any initial positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation, as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the full laboratory process is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and holds an accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can sense drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests that have a more limited detection period.
  • Makes cheating difficult: Circumventing a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical information: It can depict a timeline of drug usage over an interval, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: A timespan of approximately 5-7 days is essential for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests commonly entail higher costs compared to alternate drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration levels within the hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," this test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
