Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Deer Creek, Wisconsin. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments, offering facilities in every city across the nation capable of executing a hair analysis. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be tested in most situations. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other applications.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug analyses. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer a hair drug analysis over the traditional urine test. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers are frequent users of hair follicle drug evaluations. The primary advantage of hair follicle analyses is the extended detection window for drug use, often spanning up to 90 days, collected under observation, and difficult to manipulate. However, for detecting drug use over the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Using hair tests has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of a growing hair strand. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively adulteration-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests over 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the specimen. It's advised to use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen weight. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. References to head hair are specifically about scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug test result in the laboratory involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This process includes confirming the sample was securely sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening facilitates a quick initial assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair from the original sample is taken for Extraction preparation. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), presenting a challenge in hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated for adherence to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection timespan.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a drug use pattern over time, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: Drugs generally take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Factors like hair color and unique hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the testing is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
