Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Doering, Wisconsin. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol examination, we specialize in hair analysis, with testing centers in every major city nationwide ready to assist. For most situations, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized criteria.

Recently, drug testing methodologies have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle examinations are favored by employers with stringent drug-free policies, courts, and probation cases. A core advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, collected under observation, minimizing cheating efforts. Nonetheless, urine testing remains the prime choice for recent drug consumption within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by sealing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected close to the scalp, hair samples can reveal a detection window for alcohol and drugs extending up to roughly 3 months. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is preferred. It is advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. When head hair is mentioned, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any further data input not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most specimens, any positive findings require confirmation to be valid in judicial proceedings. Samples meeting presumptive positive criteria in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. This stage extracts drugs from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques to accomplish.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Required, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed preceding confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is supervised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Provides historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug intake over a duration of time, rather than only recent utilization.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become identifiable in hair approximately 5-7 days post use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
