Providing comprehensive hair follicle testing, Accredited Drug Testing serves Euren, Wisconsin. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities in cities Nationwide ready to perform such tests. Adequate hair length, typically 1.5 to 2 inches, on the crown or body is required. Hair tests are adaptable, assessing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in recent times as a favored method for drug screening. Courts, employers, and substance abuse professionals often choose hair tests over urine tests. Hair follicle screens aid zero-tolerance workplaces and individuals on probation. The key advantage lies in their prolonged detection period, around 90 days, with witnessed collections minimizing cheating. Conversely, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair fibers capture markers during growth, offering a longer historical overview of substance use. When taken near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and other drug use over a span of roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy for transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) collected close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional measures, and tests beyond 10 categories, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. By 'head hair,' we mean only scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other hair including facial and auxiliary types.

Process Overview

There are four critical stages in the lab processing of drug test findings: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step whereby a sample is formally entered into a lab’s records. This step involves checking that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and recording any further information not captured electronically.

Screening is a preliminary examination to identify potential drug abuse. Though economical for excluding drug use in many cases, a positive Screening result must be verified for judicial validity. Any samples yielding potentially positive results in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If presumptive positives arise during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drug residues are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than seen in other samples like urine or saliva, making hair drug analysis particularly challenging.

The Confirmation stage for any positive Screening outcomes employs techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as potentially positive are cleaned before confirmation as needed. This lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests with their limited timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify results: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably tough, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks historical patterns: Offers insights into long-term drug trends, beyond just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent use: Drugs typically require about 5-7 days post-use to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite levels in hair may fluctuate due to hair color and unique growth characteristics.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Euren, WI

Hair follicle testing excels with its extended detection window, surpassing traditional urine tests. While urine tests identify recent use, hair tests reveal usage patterns over 90 days. This broader scope offers employers a clearer picture of an individual’s substance use history. Its reliability and reduced manipulation risk further solidify its superiority in drug detection.

Unlike urine tests susceptible to adulteration, hair tests provide a tamper-resistant alternative, safeguarding the authenticity of results. The enhanced detection accuracy ensures a more comprehensive screening, vital for zero-tolerance environments. Businesses in Euren, WI, find hair testing crucial in upholding stringent drug policies and maintaining a safe workspace.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
