Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle testing in Footville, Wisconsin. Our specialization in hair and alcohol testing ensures that we cater to your needs with nationwide centers available. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is usually required, either from the scalp or body. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

More organizations, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair follicle testing over urine tests. This method is preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judicial system, and probationary services. The key advantage lies in its ability to detect drug use over a much longer duration, typically up to 90 days, with an observation-based collection process that is hard to tamper with, though urine testing remains most effective for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective tool for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a timeline for alcohol and other drugs by retaining biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair provides an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drug use. It is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It is beneficial to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When talking about head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four primary steps comprise the laboratory processing of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is processed into a lab's system. This phase ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective means to negate drug use in most samples, any positive result in Screening needs confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows potential positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is notably lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which poses a greater challenge for hair drug screening methodologies.

Confirmation of any screening positives is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as appropriate. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to shorter detection periods in urine tests.
  • Challenges in cheating: Hair drug tests are very challenging to circumvent, providing more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It highlights a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternate testing forms.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth might impact the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
