In Granton, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether it’s for detecting substances or alcohol, our specialized hair testing facilities are present across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are needed for testing. You can opt for analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a prevalent method for drug testing. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are valuable for zero-tolerance policies, court requirements, and probation situations. A key advantage is the 90-day detection window, while observation during collection ensures authenticity. Although, urine tests remain best for recent use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Examining hair has emerged as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to use a jeweler's scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four essential stages in processing a drug test result in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial integration into the laboratory’s system. This step involves confirming the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data requirements that were not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment to identify drugs of misuse. Whilst being a cost-effective method to rule out most cases of drug use, any positive screens need confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result during the Screening process, additional hair is taken from the initial collection and processed for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered the most challenging methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screen is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing if necessary before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is commonly used, but the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
