Accredited Drug Testing expertly offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Irving, Wisconsin. Should you require drug or alcohol analysis via hair testing, our specialization ensures nationwide centers, available in every city, conduct such tests. Hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is ideal, though body hair can sometimes suffice. Through hair sampling, we provide assessments for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored test options.

The trend of utilizing hair follicle testing in drug analysis has markedly grown in recent years. Many organizations, judicial bodies, and abuse specialists lean towards using hair samples rather than urine. This test suits employers with strict drug policies, judicial needs, and those on probation. Its main advantage is a robust 90-day detection period, conducted under watchful observation, making it nearly fraud-proof. However, for screenings within five days, urine tests still prove most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective approach for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term indicators of alcohol and drugs by securing biomarkers in the structure of the developing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a nearly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 strands of hair (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. When testing for EtG, additional analyses, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair are specific to scalp hair alone, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main procedural stages in the lab analysis of a drug test sample encompass four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial handling of a specimen within a lab’s framework. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to negate drug use across most samples, positive results require confirmation to be legally accepted. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo an additional confirmatory test.

In cases of a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations notably lower than those in comparable methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging technique to administer.

Any positive results from Screening are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The complete laboratory evaluation, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can observe drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which present a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistant to tampering: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides usage trends: It supplies usage patterns over an extended duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual diversity in hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
