Based in Johnstown Center, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. We specialize in these tests for substances and alcohol, with facilities across the nation fully equipped for testing. Typically, testers require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair analyses can reveal substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method over urine tests for substance evaluation. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse agencies favor this approach due to its efficiency. The test's main advantage is its extended detection window, revealing drug use up to 90 days prior. This test is collected under observation, minimizing cheating possibilities, although for recent use, a urine test remains top notch.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol exposure within approximately the last 90 days. The collection of hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch length consisting of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, enhancements, and/or testing beyond 10-panel screens, 150mg of hair is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of analyzing a drug test sample in the lab comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is entered into the lab’s system. It involves verifying the integrity and proper shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry that wasn't imported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Though a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. Any specimens indicated as potentially positive in Screening necessitate a further confirmation stage.

If a sample is preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This process involves retrieving drugs from hair at much smaller levels than in methods like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screen is carried out using methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples flagged as potentially positive undergo washing as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter period.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably harder, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It reveals a drug usage pattern over time, not only recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair testing in Johnstown Center, WI outshines urine tests by providing superior detection accuracy. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
