Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mead, Wisconsin. When you require a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, we are experts in this field, with centers available across the nation for your testing needs. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored evaluations.

The employment of hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent times. Employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are crucial for organizations with strict drug policies, the legal system, and those on probation. The notable advantage is that it offers an extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days through an observed collection process, minimizing chances of manipulation. But, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, traditional urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair strands provide a chronological record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's fibers as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it typically offers a detection period of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. It is easy to collect hair, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising approximately 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG tests, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically indicate scalp hair, whereas body hair denotes all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the specimen is first introduced into the lab's system. This step ensures the specimen was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves additional data entry if an electronic chain of custody system isn't provided.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening needs confirmation for legal validity. Any samples with preliminary positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, additional hair is drawn from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to execute.

The Confirmation step of any positive result from Screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as needed. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines along with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical data: It demonstrates a timeline of drug use over months, instead of only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Non-detection of recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Differences like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
