In Hendren, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol exam, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities in cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair samples can be checked for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing choices.

Hair follicle testing for drugs has become more common recently. Employers, courts, and those in Substance Abuse roles often favor it over a traditional urine test. This method serves zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation cases effectively. The extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and difficulty in tampering are its main advantages. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has come to be recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can deliver nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to adulteration, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a specimen into a lab's system. This involves ensuring the specimen was sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry not supplemented by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug use on most specimens, a positive screen must be validated to stand in court. Any specimens that test presumptively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very tough, rendering the outcomes more reliable.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can show a trend of drug use over time, not just the latest usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolites' concentration in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the test inspects the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outperform urine testing in Hendren, WI? It boils down to superior accuracy and reliability.
The ability to detect substances long after ingestion gives hair tests an edge over traditional urine tests. This comprehensive detection capability ensures a clear view of an individual's substance history, enhancing assessment accuracy significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
