Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Orange, Wisconsin. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities in cities across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is necessary. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for special hair testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent recently. Many companies, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for this method over standard urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation often mandate hair tests. The main advantage is its ability to detect drug use over an extended period, generally up to 90 days, with an oversight collection process, making it very hard to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, the urine test remains most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair stores a lengthy record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An ideal sample for both screening and verification is a 1.5-inch section containing approximately 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels surpassing 10, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is present, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair pertain strictly to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result consist of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This phase involves checking if the sample was securely sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for illegal drug presence. Although a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that return a presumptive positive result in Screening mandate a follow-up confirmation.

On receiving a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is withdrawn from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing as one of the most intricate methodologies.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is employed for confirming any positive screening outcome. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing as required before confirmation. Every laboratory stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, thereby ensuring more reliable results.
  • Yields historical insights: It can map a pattern of drug consumption across time, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Limited detection of recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically bears a higher cost than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
