Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Pierce, Wisconsin. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels at hair analysis and has facilities across all cities nationwide capable of performing such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required. Hair can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has increased. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair testing over the traditional urine test. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation programs use hair tests due to their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, the observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair that are continually growing. If collected near the scalp, hair can present a detection window of up to nearly three months for alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will produce 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for preliminary screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair refers to all other types (beard, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure at the laboratory for processing a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial process of incorporating a specimen into the laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying the sample’s correct sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid drug check. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug usage in the bulk of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Samples yielding a presumptive positive during Screening do require further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirming a positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test proves very challenging, boosting result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can outline a pattern of drug use over time, not only recent consumption.

Constraints:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the examination actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
