Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Union Center, Wisconsin. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with numerous testing centers Nationwide, including every city to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

In the past few years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Those with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation officers prefer hair follicle tests. The key advantage of hair tests is it detects drug use over an extended period of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it hard to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol intake. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection period for substances like alcohol and other drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to alter, and straightforward to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches involving around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for initial screening and result verification. For EtG, additional tests, or when conducting tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't present, the collection of an equivalent amount of body hair is permissible. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively pertains to scalp hair. Body hair, however, denotes any other hair types (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step in integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry missing from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift inspection for substance abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly method to negate drug use in most samples, a positive screening necessitates verification to be legally valid. All samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is obtained from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with tentative positive results are rinsed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can recognize substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceptionally tough to deceive a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result authenticity.
  • Offers consistent data: It can showcase a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur more cost than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
