Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services at Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, specializing in hair sample assessments, Accredited Drug Testing has facilities in every city nationwide ready to conduct a hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair length from the crown or body can be sampled. Hair analysis can identify the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate specific testing needs.

Lately, drug screenings have predominantly incorporated hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over the standard urine analysis. Hair assessments are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and people under probation. The leading advantage of this approach is the extended detection span of drug consumption, usually up to 90 days, using an observed collection that is challenging to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing strands. When taken close to the scalp, hair provides a detection timeframe of up to 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands, comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil, near the scalp provides 100mg, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extended panels, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair; "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, samples undergo initial processing within a laboratory’s framework. This step includes ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entries missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug usage in most samples, positive screens require confirmation for court admissibility. Samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Presumptively positive samples in Screening lead to additional hair being extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation for positive screening outcomes is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It offers patterns of drug use over time, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and personal growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
