Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Bakerhill, Alabama. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, providing facilities in cities across the Nation capable of conducting such tests. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair suffices for analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific evaluations.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are favoring these over traditional urine assessments. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with strict no-drug policies and are also required by courts for probations. Their main advantage is an extended detection window—up to 90 days—mandated collection oversight, and resistance to tampering. However, for recent 5-day usage checks, urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an essential instrument for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Trapping biomarkers within the growing hair strands allows hair to maintain a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Securing a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's prudent to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, and so on).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about initially processing a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out additional data entry that might not be covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective method for negating drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptively positive samples from Screening require additional corroboration.

A sample indicating presumptive positivity in Screening prompts additional hair removal from the original specimen and preparation for Extraction. In this phase, drug extraction from hair is accomplished at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid)—making hair drug screening a particularly advanced methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process prior to confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subjected to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests are capable of detecting drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenges in cheating: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, which leads to more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more expensive compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment concentrates on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
