Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Libertyville, Alabama. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, we have multiple locations nationwide to assist with your needs. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair testing options available include drug and alcohol/ETG testing, alongside other tailored solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more common in recent times as a preferred testing method over standard urine tests. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists opt for hair tests due to zero-tolerance policies. These tests benefit from an extended detection period of up to 90 days, an observed collection method, and minimal chances of tampering. For recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain highly precise.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a crucial utility, hair testing serves in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strand captures biomarkers within its fibers, offering a prolonged overview of substance use. When sourced near the scalp, hair reveals an estimated 3-month timeline for detecting alcohol and drugs. Its collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and hassle-free to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, deemed ideal for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or beyond 10-panel tests, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's best to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equal amount of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair; body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in laboratory processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample enters the laboratory's system for initial processing. This process ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accommodates any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. Though cost-effective in eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this phase, substances are retrieved from hair at significantly reduced concentration levels compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), attributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

To confirm any positive screening results, methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which feature a shorter period.
  • Resistant to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronicles usage patterns: Offers an assessment of drug use trends over time, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the examination is of the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
