Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Midfield, Alabama. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, we have centers nationwide ready to conduct tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our hair tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more common in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer these over urine tests because they support zero-tolerance policies and probationary requirements. The key advantage is the extended detection period, which is up to 90 days, is observed during collection, and is nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most dependable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair shaft. When samples are taken near the scalp, they can reveal a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other drugs. Hair sampling is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in girth to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity needed for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach for excluding drug use on most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptively positive result during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair in significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Validation of a positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples identified as presumptive positive undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug analysis can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are very difficult to manipulate, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical usage data: It can outline a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become discernible in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variables like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparatively, hair follicle testing triumphs over urine testing for drug detection in Midfield, AL. Its superior accuracy and extended detection window make it a preferred choice. While urine tests can detect recent use, hair tests unveil substance history over months, offering a robust and trustworthy solution for a comprehensive check.

Benefits include a longer detection timeline and a tamper-free process, qualities that set hair tests apart from their urine counterparts. This makes hair follicle testing an advantageous choice for employers seeking reliable results without compromise.

Extended Detection Window

With an extended detection window of up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Midfield, AL offers a comprehensive overview of an individual's drug use history, which is invaluable to employers. This capability far exceeds the duration covered by urine tests, providing a clearer insight into long-term substance use patterns.

This means employers gain a more complete understanding of candidates or employees, helping to ensure safety and compliance while making informed hiring or evaluative decisions. The prolonged detection period significantly contributes to maintaining a drug-free work environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
