In Onycha, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair tests, we have testing sites in every major city across the country. For most tests, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more popular for detecting drugs. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over urine tests. This method is preferred by employers with strict drug use policies, courts, and probation cases. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection timeline, up to 90 days, with a supervised sample collection that is very difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. It captures a long-term record of drug consumption by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to around 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the circumference of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in the laboratory workflow of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the foundational processing of a sample into the laboratory system. This process ensures that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry that an electronic chain of custody might not provide.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach for discounting drug usage in most samples, a positive result from Screening requires confirmation to be considered valid in legal settings. Samples with presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

When a sample indicates a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening compared to other methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive results from the screening phase is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The whole laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated in compliance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and according to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge to manipulate: It is quite challenging to fake a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical insights: It reveals a timeline of drug use over an extended period, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair about 5-7 days after consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle to urine testing in Onycha, AL, hair tests offer superior detection accuracy and reliability. This method provides a broad 90-day detection span, surpassing urine tests significantly.

Employers benefit from hair testing due to its almost cheat-proof nature and extensive detection ability. Traditional urine tests fail to match this level of thorough scrutiny, making hair tests more advantageous.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Onycha, AL, is a significant advantage, as it can uncover drug use over the prior 90 days. This comprehensive insight is invaluable for employers assessing an individual’s long-term substance habits.

Unlike other tests, hair follicle tests present a complete historical perspective, assisting in making informed decisions regarding employees and applicants.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Onycha, AL, significantly curtails the chance of sample tampering. With these tests, the risk of adulteration diminishes, yielding results that are both trustworthy and irrefutable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
