In Silverhill, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, we boast nationwide testing facilities equipped to conduct these assessments. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of one's head or body hair may suffice for testing. Options include analyses for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized tests.

The adoption of hair follicle drug examinations has increased in recent times. This method is now preferred by many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Hair drug tests benefit those with strict no-drug policies and are favored by courts and probationary situations. Their extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, and difficulty to manipulate make them advantageous. For the most precise detection of recent use (within 5 days), urine tests remain preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now considered an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an up to 3-month period for detecting drugs and alcohol. It's straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for testing and confirming results. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen’s weight. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is incorporated into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substance abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug presence in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for validity in court. Any Screening samples that test presumptively positive need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation when necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection time.
  • Hard to deceive: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical records: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Undetectable recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
