Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Alco, Arkansas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our proficiency in hair testing spans the nation with centers ready in all cities to conduct hair evaluations. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically necessary, from either the crown or body. Our hair evaluations cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other bespoke options.

Recently, hair follicle drug examination has gained preference for drug testing. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts increasingly favor hair drug tests over the conventional urine analysis. With zero-tolerance policies, many opt for hair follicle tests due to their extensive drug detection duration, reaching up to 90 days, obtained through an observable collection method, making deception nearly unfeasible. Nevertheless, when detecting recent drug usage within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing has gained prominence. It delivers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 90-day detection window for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment, comprising approximately 200 strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil), collected nearest to the scalp, should yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or extended panels beyond 10, 150mg is advisable. A jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab's system. It verifies the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody solution.

Screening is a fast initial assessment for drug misuse. While cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples testing presumptive positive in Screening require follow-up confirmation.

Presumptive positive samples in the Screening phase need additional hair taken from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a much lower concentration compared to methods like urine or oral fluid. Hair drug screening is thus among the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: Offers a pattern of drug use over time, not confined to recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself and not the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
