Serving the community of Holiday Island, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. When a hair or alcohol test is needed, we excel in hair screenings and provide convenient access to testing centers across American cities. Typically, hair on the crown, measuring between 1.5 and 2 inches, is needed, though any body hair might work. The analyses cover various substances, like drugs and alcohol/ETG.

More recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in drug testing methodologies. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine screenings. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and probation officers, are using these tests. A notable advantage of hair drug tests is their 90-day detection window, higher integrity through observed collection, and lesser chances of tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain precise for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are regarded as a strong method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance and alcohol use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair provides an approximate detection window of 3 months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to gather, moderately challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of around 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a collection of 150mg is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is introduced into a laboratory’s system. This phase includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result in the screening mandates confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any screening presumptively positive sample necessitates a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening level, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the difficulty in performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, imparting greater accuracy to the findings.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a drug usage pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variabilities: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Holiday Island, AR:

Hair follicle testing offers a superior detection accuracy compared to urine tests, making it invaluable for Holiday Island employers. The extended detection window of hair tests compared to urine provides a more comprehensive view of an individual’s drug history. For businesses, this means making informed decisions based on reliable data, thus fostering a safer working environment.

Employers and courts favoring hair tests have noted their increased reliability. The intricate nature of hair analysis, less prone to substitution or dilution, makes it a preferred choice especially for those holding stringent drug-use policies. Hair testing ensures a higher level of compliance with workplace regulations, replacing errors and uncertainties linked to traditional urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Holiday Island, AR:

The benefit of hair follicle testing lies in its extensive detection period, capturing substance use up to 90 days prior. This feature is critical for employers in Holiday Island looking for a thorough understanding of an employee’s drug history. Offering more than a snapshot, hair testing serves a comprehensive narrative of an applicant’s or employee’s past substance use.

Employers can leverage this wide detection window to assess the long-term behavior patterns related to drug use. By tapping into this comprehensive view, businesses can better prevent potential risks associated with employing individuals with concealed drug-use histories, leading to more informed hiring decisions and enhanced workplace integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
