Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Tuckerman, Arkansas. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we are specialists in the field and have centers across the nation that can administer these tests. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. These tests are increasingly mandated by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. They're chosen by employers who enforce strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers. The key advantage is their longer detection window, up to 90 days, making them difficult to falsify. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. The hair captures a historical record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can furnish a detection window of up to approximately 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch clip of about 200 strands of hair (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step involves verifying that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screening test necessitates confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require an auxiliary confirmation process.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is drawn from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo necessary washing prior to confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Offers historical usage data: It provides insights into drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color differences and personal variances in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Tuckerman, AR surpasses traditional urine tests by providing more reliable detection. With a focus on accuracy and dependability, hair tests reveal drug use with superior precision.
They offer a comprehensive view into drug use history, eclipsing the narrower detection window of urine tests, making them invaluable for employers and professionals enforcing strict drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
