At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Whitehall, Arkansas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing and nationwide centers can assist you. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body is needed. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a method of choice for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. This choice benefits zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probationary individuals. The primary advantage is the longer detection window for drug use, covering up to 90 days, observed collection, and making cheating nearly impossible. However, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair acts as a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to alter, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we indicate scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While it is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a further confirmatory step.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is removed from the initial sample for Preparation in Extraction. At this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed as needed before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over a period, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapaable of recent use detection: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
