Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Anaheim, California. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to specialist with facilities nationwide ready to conduct the tests. To qualify for testing, you typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become the method of choice. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often opt for this over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by those with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The advantage lies in its extended detection capability, up to 90 days, making it difficult to tamper with. However, for the most precise results of drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests still prevail.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended-time detection by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. By sampling hair near the scalp, a detection window of up to three months is possible for alcohol and drugs. The non-invasive collection, difficulty in tampering, and ease of transportation make it a preferred choice.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields about 100mg, which is the ideal amount for both preliminary screening and further confirmation. For assessments such as EtG, additional options, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is recommended. It is suggested that the sample's weight be measured using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, equivalent body hair can be utilized. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other types including facial and axillary hair.

Procedure Summary

The laboratory process for drug testing encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes an initial input into the lab’s system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for potential drug presence. While it offers a cost-effective means to negate drug use for most samples, outcomes indicative of drug presence require further verification to meet legal standards. Samples testing positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

For samples indicating potential drug presence at the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the primary specimen for Extraction. This step involves isolating drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid testing, underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Final confirmation of positive Screening outcomes is executed through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples testing positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entirety of the lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Low likelihood of tampering: Hair drug testing is notably difficult to manipulate, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Historical substance use insights: It can indicate long-term patterns of drug usage rather than just recent intake.

Restrictions:

  • Inability to detect recent use: A period of 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to become traceable in hair strands.
  • Costs involved: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors such as hair color and individual growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being colloquially termed "hair follicle tests," this assessment analyzes the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle lodged under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Anaheim, CA
Hair follicle testing offers a significant edge over traditional urine tests. One of the primary advantages is its superior detection accuracy; hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, whereas urine tests have a much shorter detection period. Additionally, hair tests are more reliable and difficult to manipulate, providing a more accurate screening method.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Anaheim, CA
One major advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, revealing drug use over nearly three months. This capability provides employers with a thorough understanding of an individual's substance use history, offering a comprehensive perspective that is invaluable for making hiring or monitoring decisions compared to other testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
