Operating in Genesee, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. If a hair or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with centers available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Such tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be adjusted for specific needs.

Lately, drug testing increasingly favors the hair follicle method. This testing is popular with employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals, often replacing standard urine tests. Employers with drug-free policies, courts, and probation services frequently use hair follicle tests due to their prolonged detection window, often up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making them hard to falsify. Yet, for drugs taken within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered close to the scalp, it offers approximately a 3-month window for detection of alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample should be followed. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If no scalp hair is available, an identical amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we refer to scalp hair specifically, whereas body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in laboratory processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step covers verification that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, any positive results must undergo confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate subsequent verification.

Presumptively positive samples from Screening are subjected to further evaluation during Extraction, where additional hair is extracted and prepped. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any screening-positive result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug screenings can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is arduous, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Displays a history of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Constraints:

  • Limited to older use: Detection of drugs in hair requires 5-7 days to be effective.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis generally bears higher costs than other testing forms.
  • Diversity in outcomes: Attributes such as hair tone and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
