Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing within Bloomfield, Connecticut. If a hair drug or alcohol assessment is needed, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this type of analysis, and we have facilities in every major city nationwide that can conduct hair testing. Mostly, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown area, or other body areas, may be utilized. Hair tests can identify drugs, detect alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored solutions for hair testing.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for screening drugs. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine ones. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, court cases, and probation situations frequently utilize hair follicle drug tests. A significant advantage of these tests is their ability to detect drug use over up to 90 days, through an observed collection method that is nearly impervious to tampering. However, for identifying recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has evolved into a significant tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged profile of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can present a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other narcotics. It is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. When referencing head hair, we are specifically talking about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This consists of ensuring the sample was adequately sealed and sent, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid verification for substance abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug consumption on most samples; however, a positive screen requires confirmation to be permissible in judicial proceedings. Any samples exhibiting presumption of positivity in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

Should a specimen show presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Reveals historical patterns: Provides insights into drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests carry a higher cost than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis deals with the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When examining the benefits of hair follicle testing against traditional urine assessments in Bloomfield, CT, hair testing emerges as superior. Detection accuracy is significantly enhanced, providing a more comprehensive picture of an individual's substance use history. In contrast, urine tests may only reveal recent usage.

The extended detection period offered by hair testing offers unmatched reliability. While urine tests often only detect substances used in the last few days, hair tests cover up to 90 days of history. This comprehensive analysis is invaluable for employers and legal entities seeking thorough evaluations.

With the rigorous process involved in hair testing, there's an increased assurance of precision and consistency. While urine tests have their own merit, hair follicle testing's comprehensive detection and detailed insights offer unparalleled advantages, solidifying its position as the preferred testing method.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
