In Roxbury, CT, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, our centers specialize in such tests, with locations across all cities nationwide. Typically, hair samples should measure between 1.5 and 2 inches, although body hair may also be acceptable. Our tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customizable hair testing alternatives.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity among companies, legal entities, and substance abuse experts as a preferred alternative to urine testing. Many organizations and authorities opt for hair tests due to their zero-tolerance drug policies. The main advantage of hair drug tests is their extended detection window, often up to 90 days, ensuring an accurate and observed collection process that is nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a highly effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, slightly challenging to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp supplies 100mg, which is the preferred sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. While mentioning head hair, only scalp hair is implied. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key four steps in the laboratory procedure for drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary management of a sample within a lab’s system. This step confirms that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data input missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening pertains to an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While it's a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be admissible in legal settings. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is notably challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine while having a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug assessment, ensuring the results remain precise.
  • Provides historical data: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, unlike only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug assessments typically are pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolites' concentration within hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory.
