Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug testing in Sprague, Connecticut. Whenever a hair or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments, with centers across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct these tests. A hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is typically required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific testing needs.

In the past few years, conducting drug tests has increasingly involved hair follicle testing. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by firms adhering to zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and individuals under probation. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection timeframe for substance use, generally up to 90 days, obtained through a monitored process, making them extremely difficult to manipulate. Yet, for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Regarded as a potent method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol, hair testing captures a longer-term history of substance use. Biomarkers become embedded in the strands of hair as it grows, and when a sample is taken near the scalp it can reveal up to a three-month history of drug and alcohol use. The process of gathering hair samples is straight-forward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) located nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for analysis. For testing enhancements, such as EtG or panels exceeding 10 tests, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's prudent to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent weight of body hair is acceptable. Head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Overview of the Process

The laboratory processing of drug test outcomes encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially entered into the laboratory’s system. This encompasses checking the sample’s secure sealing and correct shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra needed data not provided by any electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although it is an effective cost-saving measure to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for it to be legally admissible. Consequently, any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening need additional confirmation.

For samples yielding presumptive positives at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction phase. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), rendering hair drug testing a challenging procedure.

Confirmation of positive outcomes in Screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug testing can determine drug use up to 90 days prior, while urine tests are limited to shorter intervals.
  • Difficult to deceive: The results of hair drug tests are reliable due to the difficulty in manipulating the test.
  • Shows usage trends: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption, not just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other methods.
  • Variability in results: The concentration of drug metabolites in the hair can be influenced by hair color and individual growth rates.

Note: Often mistakenly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests actually involve analyzing the hair strands, not the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
