In Wolcott, Connecticut, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services. Our specialty lies in hair testing, with test centers located in cities across the Nation. For the test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is typically necessary. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other specialized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity recently as more entities like employers, courts, and substance abuse experts require it over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers utilize hair tests for their ability to detect long-term drug use, up to 90 days, in a secured collection process, making it hard to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are still preferred for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a potent method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. If collected near the scalp, hair can reveal usage for roughly up to a 3-month period for alcohol and other substances. The collection process for hair is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

An optimal screening and confirmation sample consists of a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, equating to about 100mg of hair. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or testing panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be collected, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug abuse signs. While Screening is an economical way to determine the absence of drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples that screen positive tentatively require secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entirety of the laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It provides a usage trend over time, beyond just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", this analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
