Located in Cape Canaveral, FL, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services nationwide. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our specialized centers can conduct them across all cities. Hair on the head or body of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically required. We analyze hair tests for substances like drugs and alcohol, with tailored testing options available.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has risen markedly in recent years. Preferred over standard urine tests by many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, these tests support strict zero-tolerance policies. Hair follicle testing boasts a longer drug detection window, up to 90 days, and reduces the likelihood of tampering due to direct collection procedures. Yet, urine tests remain optimal for recent drug use screening within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is renowned as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug exposure. When hair is harvested near the scalp, it can offer an alcohol and drug detection window that extends up to roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, an ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG and additional tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into the laboratory’s system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

In the Screening stage, a swift preliminary check is conducted for drug abuse. This phase offers a cost-effective approach to dismiss possible drug use in most samples. However, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. All samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample is determined to be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, the drugs are removed from the hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to carry out.

Confirmation for any positive screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Also, any samples showing presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subjected to scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to falsify, leading to more reliable results.
  • Historic drug usage data: It can reveal a pattern of drug abuse over a duration rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual growth rates.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
