Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in La Crosse, Florida. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing operates centers nationwide. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of the head or body is sufficient. Hair tests are versatile, offering screenings for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

In recent times, the use of hair follicle testing has increased for drug screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer these tests over traditional urine checks. Hair follicle tests enforce zero-tolerance policies, providing a detection window of up to 90 days. Collected under supervision, these tests are resistant to tampering. Yet, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers into the strands of growing hair, it offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use. When hair is collected near the scalp, it allows for a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately matching the thickness of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If head hair is not obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test result comprises four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is processed into a lab’s system. This stage involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry that wasn't included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, any positive results must undergo confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that show presumptive positivity during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screen results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can indicate drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over a duration, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to be identified in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically entail higher costs than other drug testing forms.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
