Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Alachua, Florida. For those requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise shines with specialized hair testing. With centers nationwide, including in every city, we can carry out hair assessments effectively. For an accurate test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is often necessary. Hair tests are capable of examining substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing types.

The trend towards utilizing a hair follicle drug test has grown significantly in recent years. This method is now favored by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. The main advantage lies in its extended detection window, typically reaching 90 days, paired with its observed collection process that eliminates the chance of manipulation. However, for recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use up to around a 3-month period for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, making it resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

Using a 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, and any tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specify scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes all other hair forms (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This step includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra information entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While this step is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage in the majority of cases, a confirmed result is needed for legal admissibility if the screen is positive. Any samples that appear positive tentatively in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a tentative positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. In this step, the drugs are extracted from the hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Validating any positive screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with tentative positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for a span of up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Pattern indicative: It provides insight into drug use trends over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of proximate detection: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually entail higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer as the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
