Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Montverde, Florida. Whether it is for drug or alcohol assessment, we specialize in hair analysis performed nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is typically necessary. Hair testing provides options for identifying substances, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a common approach for substance screening. Many organizations and legal authorities prefer it over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs favor hair testing for its extended detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and resistance to cheating. For substances used within the past 5 days, however, urine testing remains the optimal choice.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by trapping chemical markers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection duration for alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar in girth to a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG analysis, additional tests, or when examining more than 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If no scalp hair is accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be taken. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test result includes four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab system. This involves affirming that the sample was securely sealed and correctly shipped, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a swift evaluation for drug abuse evidence. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug use in most specimens, a positive result from Screening must be verified for court acceptability. All samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and set for Extraction. In this procedure, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex process.

For Confirmation, any positive findings from Screening are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples expected to be positive go through cleaning before Confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can uncover drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus ensuring result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can supply a timeline of drug consumption over a certain period, rather than focusing only on recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost factor: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Diverse result variations: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually concentrates on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
