Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Northeast Leon, Florida. If you need a drug or alcohol analysis using hair samples, we specialize in this area, and have numerous testing facilities nationwide that conduct these tests. Hair of 1.5 to 2 inches in length from the scalp or body is necessary in most situations. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, drug screening methods have increasingly involved hair follicle testing. Various employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by workplaces adhering to zero-tolerance policies, judicial requirements, and probation conditions. The primary advantage of hair follicle tests is their extensive detection window, typically up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process making it extremely hard to manipulate. Nevertheless, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair embeds a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances by entrapping biomarkers within the fibers of the elongating hair strand. When extracted near the scalp, hair provides an up to 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to obtain, moderately resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, considered the optimal amount for assessment and confirmation. For EtG, enhancements, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We propose weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When specifying head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test outcome encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial assimilation of a sample into a lab’s system. This entails confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be substantiated for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial collection and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly diminished concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any affirmative screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests unveil drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are highly tamper-resistant, yielding more accurate outcomes.
  • Supplies historical insight: It can offer a temporal pattern of substance usage, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally exceed the cost of other drug testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
