In Viera East, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing options. For those needing drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, this facility is proficient in such testing and has nationwide locations ready to perform it. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is generally required. Testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Recently, there has been a trend toward using hair follicle drug tests more often in drug screening processes. Many organizations, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer them over traditional urine tests. Employers with rigorous no-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation favor hair tests because they have a longer detection window, up to 90 days, are conducted under observation, and are difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer around a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and confirmatory tests. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equal quantity of body hair can be utilized. In the context of head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab’s system. It entails confirming that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing information not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that test positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the main specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drug compounds are isolated from hair in lesser concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to perform.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation as required. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Shows past usage: It can show a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Individual attributes like hair color and hair growth variations can alter metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the process examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
