In cases where scalp hair is absent, collecting an equivalent portion of body hair is acceptable. The term 'head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair. Conversely, 'body hair' encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The core processes in laboratory handling of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial assimilation of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This necessitates confirmation that the sample is appropriately sealed and shipped, the assignment of a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalization of any supplemental data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid survey for the presence of illicit substances. While Screening remains a budget-friendly solution to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive outcome requires confirmation to be valid in legal situations. Confirmation of affirmative screening results is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.
