Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Hawaiian Ocean View, Hawaii. For those requiring hair or alcohol testing, we excel in hair analysis and operate testing centers in urban areas nationwide to conduct such evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. These tests assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug evaluations are favored by zero-tolerance organizations, judicial systems, and probationary subjects. Their key advantage is detecting drug usage over a 90-day span, with supervised collection minimizing tampering, although, for recent usage within five days, urine testing remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by ensnaring biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to acquire, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch length comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's balance. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically indicate scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This process involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input absent in an electronic custody system.

Screening incorporates an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. While Screening is an economical means to eliminate substance use in the bulk of samples, a positive screen must be authenticated to be legally valid. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

Should a sample be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are stripped from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is administered through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as warranted. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug examination, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are necessary for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Outcome variability: Elements such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the density of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand rather than the follicle underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
