Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Kahuku, Hawaii. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair analysis, with facilities available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the scalp or body. Hair tests are suitable for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

In recent times, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse professionals now favor these tests over the traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are the choice for organizations enforcing strict drug-free policies, legal entities, and probation cases. Their advantage lies in detecting drug use over a 90-day period, ensuring reliability and difficulty in tampering, though urine tests remain precise for determining recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust approach for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. The hair captures a long-term record of drug and alcohol consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Collected adjacent to the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol use over an approximately three-month timeframe. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) that is closest to the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the preferred amount for accurate screening and confirmation. For advanced tests, such as EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair denote only the scalp hair. Body hair signifies all other kinds of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes these four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially processing a sample into the lab's system, ensuring it was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any absent data not supplied by an automated chain of custody method.

Screening offers a preliminary evaluation for recreational drugs. While an efficient strategy for dismissing drug use in many samples, a positive screen must be validated to hold up legally. Any sample that tests positive provisionally in Screening needs further confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is obtained from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other testing types (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is one of the most intricate methodologies to execute.

Any positive screening outcomes are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS procedures. All presumptive-positive samples are cleaned before the confirmation phase if required. The entire lab workflow from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have shorter detectability spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, providing greater accuracy in results.
  • Historical data provision: It can express a recurring pattern of drug use across a set period, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Variables such as hair color and unique hair growth rates can impact the levels of drug metabolites detected in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
