Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Kawela Bay, Hawaii. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our specialization in hair testing is evident with centers available nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required, which can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

Recently, the incorporation of hair follicle drug tests has grown in drug testing procedures. Compared to standard urine tests, hair drug tests are often preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts due to zero-tolerance policies, probation requirements, and legal mandates. These tests provide a longer detection timeframe, up to 90 days, and boast collection processes that hinder tampering, though urine tests remain ideal for screening recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a key method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive history of substance use by integrating biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal a drug and alcohol intake history spanning up to roughly 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An ideal sample consists of a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair for effective screening and verification. For EtG, additional substances, and broader tests beyond 10 panels, a total of 150mg of the sample is advisable. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for measuring. In cases where scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can serve as a substitute. When we refer to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The critical phases in the laboratory evaluation of a test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially integrating a sample into the laboratory's procedure. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and completes any further data input not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment targeting drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage possibilities in most cases, confirming a positive outcome is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples that yield presumptive positives during Screening must undergo a secondary validation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, supplementary hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive test during Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing of all presumptive positive samples occurs before Confirmation. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can identify drug use for a period up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection durations.
  • Challenge to deceive: It's notably hard to alter the results of a hair drug test, increasing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a drug usage pattern over time, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs manifest in hair approximately 5-7 days after consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Personal characteristics like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the test processes the hair strand itself, not the follicle under the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Kawela Bay, HI, hair follicle testing trumps urine tests by offering increased detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, which only provide a limited detection window, hair tests reveal a longer substance use history. This advantage is crucial for employers and professionals monitoring substance abuse, as it provides a comprehensive view of an individual's behavior beyond immediate consumption.

The superiority of hair testing is evident in its robust detection period, making it the preferred choice in various sectors. Its ability to accurately detect substances used up to 90 days prior offers unmatched reliability, setting it apart from urine tests that can be subject to tampering. Consequently, hair tests are increasingly adopted in zero-tolerance environments, ensuring strict compliance with drug-free policies.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing offers significant advantages in Kawela Bay, HI. Unlike other methods, hair testing can trace drug use up to 90 days prior, providing a thorough understanding of an individual’s drug history. This expansive detection period is particularly beneficial for employers who require a holistic view of a candidate or employee's substance habits.

Employers in Kawela Bay appreciate the comprehensive insights gained from the extended detection ability of hair follicle tests. By analyzing hair strands, these tests reveal patterns of use that help assess an individual’s long-term behavior, ensuring that employment decisions are informed by detailed and reliable data.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
