Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Laie, Hawaii. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, we have centers nationwide prepared to conduct such tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific requirements.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle testing over traditional tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair tests due to stricter policies on drug use. These tests are favored for their extended detection period of up to 90 days, conducted in a supervised manner, and difficult to falsify. Urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair sampling is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a lengthy record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers around a three-month detection period for these substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to dispatch.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is perfect for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary checks, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be collected, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. Scalp hair solely refers to the hair on the head, whereas body hair covers all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves introducing a sample into a laboratory system initially. This step comprises ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data input that's not captured by an electronic custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift examination for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective technique to exclude drug usage for most samples, any positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests tentatively positive during the Screening phase, supplementary hair is retrieved from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluids, making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Manipulating hair drug tests is notably challenging, thereby increasing result accuracy.
  • Present historical trends: It reflects a timeline of drug use, offering more than just recent consumption insights.

Limitations:

  • Inability to capture recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Pricing: Generally, hair drug tests come at a higher cost compared to other testing methods.
  • Outcome disparities: Factors like hair color and personal growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," these tests assess the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Laie, HI, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Drawing a comparison, hair testing detects substance use over a longer timeline, up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that capture recent use. This broader scope enhances detection reliability, proving vital for employers seeking comprehensive insights into an individual's history.

Detection Accuracy sets hair follicle tests apart from urine tests. In Laie, their precision in revealing patterns of drug use delivers critical data, crucial for zero-tolerance workplace policies, while reducing risks associated with false negatives often found in urine testing, providing a safer workspace.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
