Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Garden City, Idaho. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing allows us to conduct tests across cities Nationwide. Testing requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. We provide drug, alcohol/ETG, or other specific analysis through hair testing.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has risen in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is beneficial to employers with strict no-drug policies, probation officers, and the judiciary. Key advantages include an extended detection window of up to 90 days, an observable collection, and minimal risk of tampering. For recent drug use cases up to 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it can reveal substance use over a period of up to roughly three months. The simplicity of hair collection, the challenge in tampering with it, and the ease of shipping make it an advantageous choice.

A 1.5-inch cut of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG tests, additional analyses, or evaluations beyond 10 panels, it's advised to gather 150mg of hair. It's beneficial to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. It's important to note that when discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system. This involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and omitting any additional data capture not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for illicit substance use. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to identify drug absence in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for it to be court-admissible. Samples that are initially flagged positive during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

When a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is selected from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Drugs are isolated from hair at far lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing the most challenging technique.

Confirmation of positive Screening outcomes occurs through technologies like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation if required. The laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can detect drug presence for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical consumption data: Offers insight into long-term drug use patterns, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect immediate usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in Garden City, ID due to its accuracy and reliability. While urine tests are standard, hair tests detect drugs over a longer period, making them more dependable. Hair samples reflect an individual's drug use history for up to 3 months, providing a clearer picture of substance use patterns compared to the limited timeframe of urine testing. Employers prefer this enhanced detection capability.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Garden City, ID offers a far-reaching detection window, identifying drug use up to 90 days. This extended timeframe allows employers to thoroughly assess an applicant or employee's substance history comprehensively. By tapping into this lengthy detection ability, organizations can maintain a safe, drug-free workplace environment and avoid potential risks associated with undetected substance misuse.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
