Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Greenleaf, Idaho. Needing a hair drug or alcohol test? Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide to conduct such tests. You typically require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options for hair analysis.

Nowadays, drug testing strategies frequently incorporate hair follicle drug testing. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This choice is ideal for employers with zero-tolerance policies, as well as for courts and those on probation. Hair tests provide an extended detection window, up to 90 days, are observed during collection, and offer a cheat-proof method. However, for drug use detected in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. By concentrating biomarkers in the hair's growing fibers, hair offers a comprehensive record of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a laboratory drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial intake of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This process verifies proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage for most samples, a confirmed positive screen is essential for legal admissibility. Samples with tentative positives from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, substances are withdrawn from hair at a markedly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirming any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter timeframes.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, rendering the outcomes more reliable.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It charts drug consumption trends over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While the term "hair follicle tests" is common, the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
