Accredited Drug Testing provides hair follicle drug screens in Oreana, Idaho. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair follicles, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert, with centers in every city across the country capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer custom hair screening options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly favored. Numerous employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over standard urine exams. Hair tests are utilized by entities enforcing strict no-drug policies and for those on probation. The main advantage of this method is its extended detection period, tracking drug use for up to 90 days. It's held with observation and is extremely challenging to manipulate. For recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying substance use. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use, capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When clipped near the scalp, hair samples can provide around a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of ~200 strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, results in 100mg, optimal for screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair only, while "Body hair" includes all other types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the sample’s initial entry into the laboratory system. This involves ensuring proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a rapid initial check for drugs. While it is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples showing positive results in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial amount for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used for confirming any positive screening results. All presumptive positives are cleansed as needed before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes assessment under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical data: It provides a timeline of drug consumption over an extended period, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot pinpoint recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
