In Prairie, Idaho, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether it's a drug or alcohol hair test you need, we specialize in hair testing and have centers nationwide. Most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair. Hair tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor them over urine tests for zero-tolerance policies. The advantage of hair tests is their extensive detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under observation and difficult to falsify. However, urine tests are most accurate for detecting use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair preserve a prolonged record of substance use since biomarkers are captured within the structure of the developing hair. When gathered from the area near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to roughly three months for substances like alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximately matching a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, considered the optimal sample size for both testing and confirmation. For tests extending beyond 10 panels, including EtG and add-ons, a specimen weighing 150mg is ideal. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. "Head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results involves four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the preliminary handling of a sample in a lab’s system, ensuring that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial and quick assessment for substance use. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to discount drug usage in many samples, a positive result needs confirmation for legal acceptance. Presumptive positive samples from Screening demand further verification.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is taken from the primary specimen for Extraction. During this phase, substances are separated from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests the most challenging to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used for verifying any positive screening outcomes. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The complete laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes reviews under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and meets the accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can uncover drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine testing which offers a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to fraud: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical insight: It provides a record of drug use trends over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally more costly than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug testing methods in Prairie, ID, hair follicle testing emerges superior to urine testing. Hair tests provide a broader detection window, capturing substance use over months, unlike urine tests which only reflect recent use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
