Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screening services in Newtown, Indiana. If you require hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing is adept at hair analysis, with testing locations in numerous cities across the country capable of performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair analysis can include various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

Recently, drug test methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle specimens. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and those on probation lean towards hair testing. This approach offers an extended usage detection period, often up to 90 days, features an observed collection, and is resistant to manipulation. Nonetheless, urine tests remain unmatched for detecting recent substance intake within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair serves as a record for prolonged periods of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing shaft. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use for up to about 90 days. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and verification. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. When scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. Reference to head hair indicates scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in the lab process for drug test analysis: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of the sample into a lab’s system. It involves checking that the sample was securely sealed and properly dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid examination for drug misuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive finding needs verification for court acceptance. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, extra hair is selected from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive findings from Screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can spot drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can depict a timeline of drug use over a stretch of time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
